In 2008, National Grid (a power transmission and gas distribution company) identified that globally sickness absence costs the company £30.9 (c €37.1) million per year with the main causes for absence being musculoskeletal and stress related illness. Given the cost of sickness absence, National Grid was motivated to improve employee’s overall health and wellbeing. Adhering to their company values National Grid also wanted to improve employee engagement and motivation and in return reduce the business costs associated with ill health. This was achieved through effective identification, specialist support and targeted health promotion and health improvement programmes.
