Information notices on occupational diseases: a guide to diagnosis

The European Commission published in 2009 a guideline providing stakeholders key criteria for diagnosing occupational diseases.

The guide provides diagnostic criteria for each of the diseases mentioned in annex I of the EU Recommendation concerning the European schedule of occupational diseases. This annex contains a list of over 100 diseases that should be included in national legislation and, if they are work-related, are eligible for compensation (recognised occupational diseases).

The diagnostic criteria serve as a guide for clinicians, occupational health practitioners, hygienists, scientists, social partners, national authorities, and other health professionals with a responsibility and/or interest in the diagnosis of occupational diseases. The document follows the same structure as annex 1 of the Recommendation and uses the same numbering to refer to each of the diseases:
1 Diseases caused by specific chemical agents
2. Skin diseases caused by substances and agents not included under other headings
3. Diseases caused by the inhalation of substances and agents not included under other headings
4. Infectious and parasitic diseases
5. Diseases caused by specific physical agents
