IPA Summary

James Sumner

For more than a decade, EU-OSHA has been helping to integrate the Western Balkans and Türkiye into the European occupational safety and health system. EU-OSHA works closely with countries in the Western Balkans and Türkiye under the Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance (IPA), supported by the European Commission, to enable those countries to participate in the work of the Agency.

EU-OSHA has established focal points in Serbia, Türkiye, Albania, The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Montenegro and Kosovo under UNSCR 1244/99. Through its work with these countries, EU-OSHA supports the development of National tripartite OSH networks and provides knowledge, information and expertise to our colleagues in the Western Balkans and Türkiye.
Our partners under the IPA programme have been actively involved in the work of the EU-OSHA, attending focal point meetings in Bilbao with representatives from the Member States, EFTA and EEA countries. This provides a basis for sharing information and enables the countries to develop their national systems in line with those in the EU.

With the support of the IPA programme, we have organised seminars and participated in national events in the Western Balkans and Türkiye, helping to develop the capacity of our colleagues in the IPA countries to manage different challenges in occupational safety and health. We have translated a number of documents into national languages and have supported countries to participate in the next round of our Enterprise survey on new and emerging risks (ESENER), examining how OSH is managed in different sizes and types of workplaces.
The positive and productive cooperation that we have received from our colleagues in the Western Balkans and Türkiye has made our ongoing collaboration a success and we would like to thank them all for participating in our work.

We look forward to having the opportunity to continue working together in the future to help make the EU and the region safer, healthier and more productive places to work.
