Der er udviklet en række værktøjer og vejledende dokumenter af medlemsstaterne, de europæiske institutioner, erhvervsorganisationer, arbejdsmarkedets parter og andre aktører for at hjælpe virksomhederne med at foretage tilbundsgående og effektive risikovurderinger. Disse værktøjer repræsenterer en bred vifte af metoder til effektiv håndtering af skadelige stoffer. Ofte omfatter de bestemte arbejdsgange, såsom påfyldning og pumpning af væsker, eller svejseprocesser. Andre kilder giver et dækkende overblik over en bestemt gruppe stoffer, såsom sensibiliserende stoffer, eller fremhæver risici, der er typiske i visse brancher.
Disse værktøjer understøtter desuden risikovurdering af høj kvalitet og omfatter for størstedelen også gode praktiske løsninger, hvor det forklares, hvordan man mindsker risici i almindelige arbejdssituationer, der indebærer eksponering for skadelige stoffer.
