Palestinian National OSH Committee comes to Bilbao

On 7 September 2015, a tripartite delegation from the Palestinian National OSH Committee visited Bilbao as part of EU-OSHA’s ENP project. The study visit was supported by the European Commission under the European Neighbourhood and Partnership Instrument (ENPI). The delegation consisted of representatives from the Palestinian Ministry of Labour and also social partners from the workers and employers side.

The study visit was an opportunity to share information and experiences and, in particular, to provide European examples of good practice in occupational safety and health management. To that end, representatives from EU-OSHA’s network participated in the event to add their expertise and experience to the discussion.

The Palestinian National OSH Committee is working to develop its capacity to manage occupational safety and health, including with the recent inauguration the Palestinian National Centre for Occupational Safety, Health, and Environmental Protection based at the Palestinian Polytechnic University. To this effect, the delegation was also able to visit the Spanish National OSH Institute and the Basque Institute of Workplace Health and Safety located in Barakaldo.

This was a great opportunity to learn more about the structure and activities of these institutions and to tour their laboratories and find out more about the excellent work they are doing. It was also an opportunity for the delegation to see an example of European OSH Institutes in action. We are very grateful to both of these institutes for the invitation to visit their offices and for and the informative and productive discussions.

We would like to thank all of the participants in the study visit and, in particular, our colleagues from the Palestinian National OSH Committee. EU-OSHA looks forward to continuing to work together to make our neighbourhood a safer, healthier and more productive place to work.
