In the railroad yard there are many high-intensity noise sources meanwhile failure to hear a train approaching can result in fatal accidents. Both the Railway Medical Services and the Finnish railways had hearing level criteria for workers to ensure their adequate hearing. Usually annual medical tests had to be conducted to assess hearing ability. The challenge being that hearing had to be appropriate with the protection on. The company concluded that nothing could be done about the noise sources, thus they decided to purchase hearing protectors. The organisations wanted to develop a simple method of selecting hearing protectors without compromising the safety of workers.
