Responsibility for safety and health at work in Austria is shared between various bodies. The legal basis is provided by the Safety and Protection of Health at Work Act [ArbeitnehmerInnenschutzgesetz] and the regulations which go with it. The Labour Inspectorate, the provincial [Land] Agricultural and Forestry Inspectorates and organisations serving public sector employees are responsible for overseeing compliance with legislation to do with safety and health at work. The website of the Labour Inspectorate contains all necessary information.
Employers are responsible for preventive measures, but are supported in this by the social partners and social insurance institutions.
The Federal Ministry of Labour, to which the Labour Inspectorate belongs, acts as the Focal Point. All important players are represented in the Austrian network and involved in all matters pertaining to the Agency.
