Gli Stati membri, le istituzioni europee, le associazioni imprenditoriali, le parti sociali e altri attori hanno sviluppato numerosi strumenti e documenti di orientamento per aiutare le aziende a effettuare valutazioni del rischio complete ed efficaci. Tali strumenti rappresentano un’ampia gamma di approcci per gestire efficacemente le sostanze pericolose. Spesso riguardano operazioni di lavoro specifiche, come il riempimento e il pompaggio di liquidi o i processi di saldatura. Altre fonti forniscono una panoramica completa di un determinato gruppo di sostanze, come i sensibilizzanti, oppure evidenziano i rischi tipici in alcuni settori.
Inoltre, oltre a sostenere una valutazione dei rischi di elevata qualità, la maggior parte di questi strumenti include buone soluzioni pratiche, che spiegano come ridurre i rischi in situazioni di lavoro comuni che comportano l’esposizione a sostanze pericolose. Esistono anche strumenti destinati a sostenere attori specifici, come gli ispettori del lavoro, le piccole e medie imprese e i rappresentanti dei lavoratori, tra numerosi altri soggetti.
