The circular economy and safety and health: The role of digitalisation in the circular economy and implications for occupational safety and health until 2040

Keywords:

A shift to a circular economy (CE) is key to the future sustainability of the EU. For an effective transition to a Circular Economy, digital technologies are essential. Both workplace digitalisation as well as the change to circularity present opportunities and challenges for occupational safety and health (OSH), that need to be incorporated in this transition.

This policy brief examines the role of digitalisation in a Circular Economy and its potential OSH effects under four CE scenarios in 2040. It focuses on issues common to all four scenarios, including information provision and sharing, work flexibility, deskilling, and risks related to worker surveillance and monitoring.

The article concludes by discussing the challenges of managing the role of digital technologies in the transition to a CE with good performance of OSH.
