Worker participation to prevent musculoskeletal disorders in the assembly of boilers

This case study highlights the steps involved in a participatory intervention to reduce occupational risks for boiler assemblers and how it was adopted into the company’s prevention culture.

The researchers from the National Institute for Insurance against Accidents at Work used an innovative method combining worker focus groups and fault tree analysis. Essentially, workers participated in identifying and prioritising risks, as well as suggesting solutions. When management implemented suggestions to improve equipment, workstation layout and assembly procedures, the workers responded positively.

Consequently, they became more aware of and proactive in matters involving their own safety and health.
