FirstFit Method - assessing, monitoring and providing feedback on paramedics’ physical capacity

This case study describes the FirstFit Method, a nationwide Finnish initiative developed by the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health (FIOH) to assess, support and monitor the physical capacity of paramedics. The initiative arose from the paramedic community's own concerns about the physically demanding nature of their work—particularly tasks like lifting and carrying patients.

The FirstFit Method provides a structured, evidence-based approach to reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injuries through standardised physical testing, feedback, and training. The case  study explores how it was developed and implemented, what results it has produced, and how it supports the health, safety and work ability of paramedics.
