The ALM approach – preventing musculoskeletal risks during patient handling and transfer

Keywords:

This case study presents the ‘Accompagner La Mobilité’ (ALM) approach which was first introduced in 2012 at the Paris Saint-Joseph Hospital Group and then adopted by INRS in 2018. Its objective is to shift how care is delivered by promoting a culture of prevention and focusing on the natural movement abilities of patients.

The ALM approach relies mainly on adapting work to people and not adapting people to work. It has benefits for carers, establishments and patients by helping them maintain maximum independence. This case study explores the origins, implementation and results of the ALM approach, highlighting its potential to transform care practices, reduce musculoskeletal risks, and improve outcomes for both carers and patients across the HeSCare sector.
