Exposure to biological agents and related health problems in animal-related occupations

Keywords:

This discussion paper presents new research confirming that people in animal-related occupations — such as livestock farmers, slaughterhouse workers and veterinarians — are at particular risk of being exposed to biological agents at work. The discussion paper considers vulnerable groups and emerging risks, making recommendations for improved prevention and offering examples of good practice.

A literature review, data collection, and interviews and focus groups with experts were the basis of the findings presented here, and they formed part of a major project to increase knowledge and awareness of workplace exposures to biological agents and the risks that they pose.
