Description
On the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, ETUI invites you to a webinar on gender-based violence and harassment (GBVH) at work, examining how different workplace instruments and actors can contribute to effectively addressing it.
Gender-based violence and harassment are deep-rooted structural problems that profoundly affect the physical and mental well-being of many people across Europe and worldwide — the overwhelming majority of whom are women. A study in 2024 showed that one in three women in the EU-27 have experienced physical violence or threats and/or sexual violence in her lifetime. Some of these incidents occur in the workplace or in work-related contexts, while others have spillover effects at work. The world of work is therefore a crucial arena for action to prevent gender-based violence and harassment, and to support survivors - including legislation, collective agreements, trade union initiatives and workplace practices.
The EU Directive on combating violence against women and domestic violence from 2024 was a landmark piece of legislation, but it does not specifically address the world of work or the actors and tools that can be mobilized to tackle GBVH in that context. This webinar will present a new ETUI working paper, which identifies the gaps left by the Directive when it comes to the world of work and proposes measures to address these. It will also include contributions by experts, trade unions and policymakers to shed light on the various ways in which gender-based violence – including domestic violence – affects workers and workplaces, and reflect on the future trajectory of EU action in this field.
