Occupational medicine in the EU: the specialist doctors’ perspective

This discussion paper provides an overview of the role of occupational medicine specialists in supporting occupational safety and health compliance across Europe. Based on a recent survey by the European Union of Medical Specialists – Occupational Medicine Section, the issues facing the profession are highlighted, including training, qualifications and the harmonisation of practice within EU frameworks. National differences in service delivery are identified as well as opportunities and challenges, including workforce shortages and coverage gaps, especially in relation to small enterprises and non-standard work.
