The transportation and storage sector is highly diverse, encompassing a broad range of roles, such as drivers and warehouse managers, among many others. With over 10 million workers in the EU, a targeted occupational safety and health (OSH) approach is crucial.

EU-OSHA has released the report Transportation and storage activities – Evidence from the European Survey of Enterprises on New and Emerging Risks (ESENER), examining OSH management in the sector by looking into the findings across the three survey waves (2019, 2014 and 2009) and carrying out interviews with sector representatives.

The report identifies influencing factors like enterprise size and the main risk factors among workers such as prolonged sitting and risk of accidents with machines. The publication also explores the most frequent health problems, including musculoskeletal disorders and mental health-related issues and proposes tailored policy pointers to improve OSH in the sector.

A summary of the report is also available, and comprehensive survey results for the sector can be explored through the ESENER data visualisation.
