Exposure to biological agents and related health problems in arable farming

Keywords:

This discussion paper presents the findings of research confirming that workers in the arable farming industry — farmers, crop workers and greenhouse workers — are at a high risk of being exposed to biological agents in the workplace. By the nature of their work, these workers come into contact with a diverse range of biological agents on a regular basis, resulting in a high prevalence of work-related diseases in this sector.

The discussion paper addresses the health effects derived from such exposure and discusses both the workers who are most vulnerable and emerging risks. It offers examples of successful policy measures currently established in Europe and suggests ways in which to ensure prevention is improved.
