Biological agents and associated work-related diseases in occupations that involve travelling and contact with travellers

Keywords:Dangerous substances, Biological agents

New research carried out as part of a major project to address the knowledge gap on biological agents in the workplace reveals that workers in occupations that involve travel or contact with travellers — including those who travel across national borders and those who work with migrants and refugees — are at particular risk of exposure to biological agents.

This discussion paper looks at the wide range of occupations in this sector and how they differ considerably in their levels of exposure. It discusses the related health effects, emerging risks and those groups that are particularly vulnerable. Using information from interviews with experts and focus groups, it also highlights the lack of targeted measures, and outlines the need for a more streamlined approach to prevention.
