TREXMO
EU & international information

TRanslation of EXposure MOdels (TREXMO) is a unique software for six existing models for regulatory occupational exposure assessment. Five of them, i.e. ART, Stoffenmanager, ECETOC TRA v3, MEASE and EMKG-EXPO-TOOL, are recommended within the context of the EU's REACH legislation. The last, EASE, is an old model, which was used as the basis for two REACH models, i.e. TRA and MEASE. This tool is intended to provide a more reliable and safer exposure and risk assessment. The user needs to register and can then calculate exposure levels on three different levels of detail.

Control Banding @ LLNL
EU & international information

On the website, a control banding tool for nanomaterials is provided. It allows controlling worker exposures to constituents that are found in the workplace in the absence of firm toxicological and exposure data. The CB Nanotool is quantitatively validated and can be used by both experts and non-experts to assess risks with nanotechnology operations and prescribe appropriate engineering controls. Additionally, the website gives access to multidisciplinary approaches like a Risk Level Based Management System.

Nanosafer
MS information

NanoSafer is a combined control-banding and risk management tool that enables assessment of the risk level and recommended exposure control associated with production and use of manufactured nanomaterials (e.g., nanoparticles, nanoflakes, nanofibers, and nanotubes) in specific work scenarios. In addition to manufactured nanomaterials, the tool can also be used to assess and manage emissions from nanoparticle-forming processes.

Advanced REACH Tool
EU & international information

The ART REACH Tool aims to support the chemical safety assessment in the scope of REACH registration regarding the occupational health part. It includes a mechanistic model of inhalation exposure and a statistical facility to update the estimates with measurements selected from an in-built exposure database or the user’s own data. The user can refine his estimates with this combination of model estimates and data. ART is only calibrated to assess exposure to inhalable dust, vapours, and mists.

New EU guide on biological monitoring at work
EU & international information

EU-OSHA’s new guide aims to help occupational health professionals and managers set up and manage workplace biomonitoring programmes for chemical exposure and use the results to improve prevention. It may also be useful to occupational hygienists and worker representatives.

Gender differences

A new flyer presents key insights from the Workers’ Exposure Survey on cancer risk factors in Europe (WES), viewed through a gender perspective.

The findings show that male workers are more often exposed than female workers to at least one cancer risk factor; however, there are exceptions when looking at specific sectors or occupations.

For example, 48% of female workers in the healthcare sector are highly exposed to formaldehyde, compared with 31% of male workers.
