The European Platform for Occupational Hygiene (EPOH) has launched a Europe-wide initiative to harmonise the competencies expected of occupational hygienists.

EPOH’s new competency framework aims to improve comparability between countries, support professional mobility, and strengthen recognition of occupational hygiene qualifications across Europe.

Developed in collaboration with national occupational hygiene associations, the framework will help employers, regulators, and professionals ensure that occupational hygiene assessments are carried out by competent specialists equipped to protect workers’ health in diverse regulatory and industrial environments.

More workers are being exposed to excessive heat, while workplace prevention measures do not always reflect the scale of the risk. Heat exposure must be treated as a serious occupational safety and health issue, one that requires risk assessment and an action plan for effective prevention.

This guidance is a timely resource for workplaces dealing with physical work, outdoor tasks, hot processes, PPE or poorly cooled indoor environments. It explains how to identify heat stress risks, recognise heat-related illness, protect vulnerable workers and apply practical prevention measures.

For employers, workers and OSH professionals, it provides a practical basis for strengthening heat-risk prevention before exposure leads to illness, reduced performance or accidents.

Read the guidance and share it with those working to protect workers in hot conditions.

Risk assessment opens the door to safe and healthy work. Yet many small businesses struggle to unlock that door, held back by limited resources and a lack of OSH expertise.

Fifteen years ago, EU-OSHA launched OiRA, the Online interactive Risk Assessment platform, to help MSEs across Europe manage occupational risks and better protect their workers.

As heatwaves intensify across Europe, heat exposure is becoming a serious threat to workers’ health.

The Online interactive Risk Assessment (OiRA) tool on heat and cold helps companies assess thermal hazards and identify appropriate preventive measures.

These may include adapting work organisation, planning rest breaks, improving access to drinking water, shade and ventilation, providing suitable protective equipment, and helping workers recognise the early signs of heat stress.

The tool also helps employers consider the specific needs of vulnerable workers and supports compliance with EU occupational safety and health requirements.

Discover the OiRA tool on heat and cold and help bring heat prevention to more workplaces this summer. It is also available in Spanish and Catalan, and is under development for Greece, Portugal and Croatia.

New to OiRA? Watch the short tutorial, also available in Bulgarian, Dutch, French and Slovak (more coming soon).
