Welding is one of the most commonly carried out tasks in the manufacturing sector, putting hundreds of thousands of workers at risk of lung problems caused by the hazardous fumes produced.

To raise awareness of the issues and to help workers and their supervisors identify and implement appropriate control measures, the British Occupational Hygiene Society, in collaboration with several other influential organisations, developed the web-based Welding Fume Control Selector Tool, following a survey among potential users.

The tool is free, easy to use and publicly available, and generates tailored guidance on how best to control the risks associated with a given welding task within minutes. It is part of the Breathe Freely in Manufacturing information package and can be used by employers and workers.
