sleep apnoea

Definition:

sleep disorder characterised by pauses in breathing during sleep (where each episode lasts long enough so that one or more breaths are missed) occurring repeatedly throughout sleep, leading to a lack of oxygen

Context: Info
Context:

Every day, over 100,000 professional drivers transport people or goods along the Finnish roads. Research shows that an alarming number of these drivers are overweight and thus at risk of developing illnesses such as diabetes or sleep apnoea, which reduce alertness and may lead to work disability.

Notes

The standard definition of any apnoeic event includes a minimum 10-second interval between breaths. The patient wakes up, falls asleep again and the respiration stops again. This process can repeat itself hundreds of times a night, decreasing the quality of sleep drastically and leading to increased fatigue during the day
