The fishing industry accounts for a disproportionately high number of fatal and serious accidents, with UK accident statistics suggesting that the industries fatal accident rate is 115 times higher than that of the general workforce. However, despite the dangerous nature of this work, many fishing crews are poorly trained and fail to take basic precautions such as wearing personal floatation derives. Furthermore, a large number of fishing vessels are poorly designed, putting crewmembers at unnecessary risk of muscular skeletal disorders or falling overboard.
