Musculoskeletal disorders: association with psychosocial risk factors at work

Keywords:

Historically, efforts to reduce the risk of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) in the workplace have focused on physical work factors. However, the relation between MSDs and psychosocial factors, such as excessive workloads and a lack of support, is important. Psychosocial risks can contribute to and exacerbate MSDs, and MSDs can be associated with psychosocial factors.

With the current Healthy Workplaces Campaign in mind, this timely literature review examines the evidence for the association between psychosocial risk factors and MSDs. It provides recommendations for effective approaches to prevent MSDs and discusses how employers can aid the rehabilitation and return to work of workers recovering from MSDs.
