About one third of the forest in Hesse belongs to private owners, often farmers. As their main occupation is farming, they are often not sufficiently trained in forestry work. However, forestry work is extremely dangerous: it is an industry with high rates of work-related injuries and a high rate of accidents.
Training material and courses for self-employed farmers and farm workers have already existed however, the level of participation has remained quite low. The reason seems to be, that the workers cannot leave their farm for the required time period since they cannot leave their animals unattended.
