Outcomes of the EP EMPL Committee Hearing on the new EU OSH Strategic Framework 2021-2027

An exchange of views on the future EU Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Strategic Framework 2021-2027, asbestos included, was held on 18 March at the European Parliament Committee on Employment and Social Affairs.

Commissioner for Jobs and Social Rights, Nicolas Schmit, and EU-OSHA's Executive Director, Christa Sedlatschek, together with some experts and social partners’ representatives, attended the hearing, presenting their views and answering questions on the future Strategic Framework within the context of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Commissioner Schmit highlighted the importance of OSH during the pandemic as a public priority in protecting workers for the functioning of the society, the economy and for the continuity of all activities. He also referred to the enormous challenges ahead and how concrete measures are needed to overcome them. In this sense, the new OSH Strategic Framework aims to contribute to improve work-related diseases and accidents’ prevention and to promote the zero vision for fatal accidents at work.

Dr Christa Sedlatschek referred to the new OSH Strategic Framework as an important milestone, which provides all with an opportunity to reflect on where we are, what we have achieved and how we wish to advance towards the future. She also emphasised the importance of the lessons learnt and how the new framework should be ambitious, visionary and inclusive. In this sense, Dr Sedlatschek mentioned certain groups of workers, such as seasonal workers in the agriculture sector, and migrant workers in the construction industry, and how the new strategy could offer better OSH protection to them.
