Alert and sentinel systems for the identification of work-related diseases in the EU

On 31 January 2018, in Leuven (Belgium), the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA) brought together more than 30 leading experts and policy-makers from various European countries to discuss and consolidate the results of the project ‘Methodologies to identify work-related diseases — review on sentinel and alert approaches’. The workshop provided the opportunity to discuss the feasibility of implementing alert and sentinel approaches taking into account the various national contexts in the EU. Making use of the alert and sentinel approaches already in place in some EU countries to improve sentinel surveillance at both member state and EU level and the importance of cooperating and exchanging data within the EU was highlighted. Opportunities for collaboration among participants were also identified.
