The winners of the 5th EU Health Prize for Journalists were announced by Commissioner for Health Tonio Borg at an award ceremony in Brussels.

EFSA to renew its Scientific Committee and Scientific Panels (11. 04. 2014)

On 9 April 2014, the European Food Safety Authority launched a call to renew membership of its Scientific Committee and eight of its ten Scientific Panels. The call is addressed to scientists who wish to be considered for membership of the Scientific Committee and the following Scientific Panels:

UK, TUC: The health and safety of older workers - Guidance (11. 04. 2014)

There is a higher proportion of older people in Britain now than at any time in recent history and it is likely to increase. We are also seeing changes in the number of older people in the workplace. This guidance will help workplace representatives accommodate for an aging workforce.

EU-OSHA will be active at the XX World Congress in Frankfurt, Germany this August (10. 04. 2014)

EU-OSHA will be very active at the XX World Congress on Safety and Health at Work in Frankfurt, Germany between 24 and 27 August, 2014. As well as holding its own symposium, EU-OSHA staff will be speakers in a number of other sessions, be on the EU-OSHA stand, and be participating in the International Media Festival for Prevention.

USA, New Topic Page Promotes Healthy Aging (07. 04. 2014)

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recently released a new topic page that offers a worker-focused perspective on health and safety and chronic disease issues related to aging. This is one of the first NIOSH topic pages to co-align with the existing Total Worker HealthTM webpage.

EU-First interactive Nano-Platform on „Safe Handling of Nanomaterials“ published (05. 04. 2014)

The German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV) has recently launched the Nano-Platform “Safe handling of Nanomaterials”. 

The Nano-Platform offers up-to-date information on occupational health and safety and novel, interactive E-Learning-Tools, so-called “Nanoramas”. “Nanoramas”, a lexical blend of “Nano” and “Panorama”, are new E-Learning tools in which the user enters a virtual space and moves around in it. By completing the “Nanoramas”, users learn which nanomaterials and nano-products are used in their respective trade. On the other hand, the “Nanoramas” allow users to assess the occupational exposure to nanomaterials and to identify necessary protective measures when handling the materials.

Belgium sets up a register of nanomaterials (04. 04. 2014)

On proposal of the Minister of Social Affairs and Public Health Laurette Onkelinx , the Council of Ministers agreed on the Royal Decree on the placing on the market of substances manufactured in the nanoparticle state, to address the  potential impact of a growing number of products containing nanomaterials on public health and the health of workers. Indeed , because of their size, nanomaterials can have specific ( eco) toxicological properties yet little known.

European Neighbourhood Policy Project (03. 04. 2014)

Since February 2014, EU-OSHA has been working on a project funded under the European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP).

The project will run until January 2016 and aims to involve ENP partner countries in the work of the Agency by establishing a single contact point in each country to provide a platform for sharing information with the local safety and health network.

EU - ECHA adopts substance evaluation plan for 2014 - 2016 (02. 04. 2014)

The Community rolling action plan (CoRAP) for 2014-2016 is available on ECHA website. The update contains 120 substances that will be reviewed by 21 Member States under the substance evaluation process of REACH.

Singapore WSH Conference 2014: “Integrating safety and health: Towards a holistic approach” (01. 04. 2014)

A Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) Conference will take place on 7 and 8 May 2014 in Singapore and will bring together 700 WSH professionals, business leaders and government officials to learn about latest trends and developments impacting WSH and its practice.

E-capacit8 - Training project on health and ageing for occupational health professionals (25. 03. 2014)

E-capacit8 is co-funded by the Health Programme of the European Union. It is concerned with meeting the need for extracurricular training for occupational health professionals (OHPs) on health and ageing.

ECHA-Harmonised classification & labelling - consultations for E-glass fibres, glass fibres and dicyclohexyl phthalate (14. 03. 2014)

The CLH reports for E-glass fibres and glass fibres of representative composition, submitted by France, propose respectively classification for Carcinogenicity 1B (H350i with note R) and Carcinogenicity 2 (H351 with note R) according to the CLP Regulation (1272/2008). The fibres are used in applications such as general or specific air and liquid filtration in industry, public and residential buildings, separation in battery and insulation in aeronautics.

EU - Health and safety: Commission adopts new decision setting up the Scientific Committee on Occupational Exposure Limits (13. 03. 2014)

The European Commission has adopted a new decision setting up a Scientific Committee on Occupational Exposure Limits (SCOEL) for Chemical Agents.
This decision repeals Commission Decision 95/320/EC, which set up SCOEL in 1995.

DE - Atypical employment is gender-specific (13. 03. 2014)

Although both genders are affected by precarious employment, statistics reveal significant differences between men and women. While 71 % of temporary workers are men, part-time work is dominated by 86 % of women. This is the conclusion of the annual report "Health and Safety at Work 2012" ( SuGA ) of the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health ( BAuA) on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs (BMAS ). The report provides a statistical overview of the world of work , working conditions and occupational health and safety.

EU - Prior Informed Consent (12. 03. 2014)

New EU Regulation for export and import of hazardous chemicals enters into operation.

From 1 March 2014, new rules concerning the export and import of very hazardous chemicals will be implemented, when the revised Prior Informed Consent (PIC) Regulation becomes operational. At the same time, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) will take over the administrative and technical responsibility from the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission.

Long-term trends of work accidents and occupational diseases in Belgium – EUROGIP overview (10. 03. 2014)

The EUROGIP overview presents figures on work-related injuries in the private sector for which the Belgian insurance system for work accidents  and occupational diseases is dual. Occupational and commuting accidents are covered by the Fonds des accidents du travail (FAT) (occupational accidents fund) and occupational diseases by  the Fonds des maladies professionelles (FMP) (Occupational diseases fund) Statistics cover time trends in occupational accidents and diseases and detailed figures on compensation.  The figures were compiled from the Funds´ 2012 annual report.
