Directives and regulations – road traffic

In addition to OSH directives, the road transport sector is covered by various directives and regulations on driving and road transport, such as:

  • Regulations on driving times, breaks and rest periods for drivers engaged in the carriage of goods and passengers by road (Regulation (EC) 561/2006 and Directive 2002/15/EC);
  • A directive laying down the maximum authorised dimensions in national and international traffic and the maximum authorised weights in international traffic for certain vehicles circulating within the Community.
  • A directive on driving licenses.

In 2017, a new study "Road transport hauliers in the EU: social and working conditions" was published. It is a follow-up of a 2013 analysis and gives an overview on the social legislation and working conditions of professional road transport drivers. It concentrates on the impact of legislation on the working conditions, including driving times and rest periods and gives an assessment of the drivers living and working conditions in general. Finally, recommendations are given on legislative, executive and technical measures which may contribute to improving the drivers working conditions.

Further information about these and other relevant European directives and regulations concerning road traffic can be found on the website of the European Commission.
