Technical recommendations for monitoring individuals for occupational intakes of radionuclides

Guidance issued by the EU Commission in 2018 on best practice relating to monitoring individuals for occupational intakes of radionuclides.

The guidance document presents technical recommendations for the individual monitoring of occupational intake of radionuclides and internal dosimetry. It also provides comprehensive guidance and advice on best practice. 
The target audience includes internal dosimetry services operating within the EU, as well as competent national and international authorities and site operators who are responsible for radiation protection programmes. 
The document takes account of Council Directive 2013/59/Euratom as well as the developments embodied in the ICRP Occupational Intakes of Radionuclides report series.

The recommendations cover: (i) the roles and duties of dosimetry services; (ii) monitoring programmes; (iii) monitoring methods; (iv) assessment of internal doses arising from monitoring measurements; (v) accuracy requirements and uncertainty analysis; (vi) quality assurance, and criteria for approval and accreditation; and (vii) radon measurement and dosimetry for workers. Supporting information is provides in the annexes. Topics addressed in the annexes include biokinetic and dosimetric models, monitoring and dosimetry for first responders after a major accident, and the application of internal dosimetry when assessing health risks. Finally, there is a set of examples that demonstrate key features of the technical recommendations.
