USA: NIOSH- Use of cleaners and disinfectants at the workplace in the frame of COVID-19 pandemic measures

Both cleaning and disinfecting are important for reducing the spread of viral illnesses. Many cleaners and especially chemical disinfectants, however, can be harmful to workers if they are unsafely handled and/or improperly used. Therefore, it is important that these products are selected and used properly to ensure effective disinfection and avoid harm to individuals and damage to surfaces and that changes to cleaning routines are included in the workplace risk assessment.

This NIOSH page offers information about the health hazards that could be caused by cleaning products and disinfectants and the recommended measures to protect workers from these hazards and supplements existing guidance for disinfection of viruses. The information is intended to be used by employers and workers who use cleaning products and disinfectants, specifically those identified as effective against viruses. It should be noted that the number of calls to poison centers increased in the USA at the beginning of March 2020 for exposures to both cleaners and disinfectants according to CDC.
