World day 2013: Putting the health into health and safety Apr 24, 2013
The ILO World day for safety and health at work 2013 is focusing on the prevention of occupational diseases.
The world day, that falls on 28 April is highlighting that of the 2.34 million occupational fatalities each year around the world, fewer than 15% result from accidents, and that there are about 5,500 work-related diseases deaths each day. This imbalance is even more marked in Europe, with under 5% of EU work-related deaths resulting from accidents, according to the ILO statistics.
Despite these numbers, there is still the tendency to see the prevention of harm to workers as primarily a safety issue.
