Cobots, robots and drones: the impact of digital technology on OSH in agriculture and forestry

Farmers and foresters are exposed to many occupational safety and health (OSH) risks. As our new policy brief sets out, digital technology has the potential to reduce these risks, but its adoption in the
sector has so far been slow, and brings its own hazards.

For instance, robotic harvesters and weeding devices could help to prevent musculoskeletal disorders but using new machines requires the appropriate training and risk assessment. Cobots and drones
could cut the time it takes to perform tasks, but could also increase the incidence of lone and monotonous work.

The brief concludes that the positive impact of new technologies on OSH will be limited unless accompanied by the development of a prevention culture in the sector.
