Austria: AUVA support schemes — AUVAsicher and AUVAfit and other initiatives tackling MSDs

Keywords:Campaign 2020-2022, Musculoskeletal disorders, Employers

This case study finds that the percentage of workers in Austria with a musculoskeletal disorder (MSD) is higher than the EU average. Tackling MSDs is a priority in national occupational safety and health (OSH) strategies. AUVA, the largest statutory accident insurance provider in Austria, has a legal mandate to provide small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with safety-related and occupational medical advice free of charge.

The AUVAsicher programme focuses particularly on MSD prevention. SMEs present particular challenges, such as a lack of OSH understanding and knowledge in house, and initiatives such as AUVAsicher provide a valuable avenue through which assistance can be provided.

AUVA provides support to companies also through AUVAfit and BAUfit schemes. The AUVAfit programme has a specific focus on mental and physical workload.
