Embracing diversity for healthier workplaces: European Diversity Month

The European Diversity Month, an initiative of the European Commission, is observed in May to shine a spotlight on the importance of diversity and inclusion in the workplace and in society. This year’s theme is centred around building bridges between organisations and areas of inclusion and diversity with a focus on various aspects such as race, gender, age, and more.

Occupational health and safety (OSH) play an important role in integrating everyone into the workforce as all workers need to be protected equally from work-related risks. Unfortunately, some groups of workers remain at higher risk than others such as women, migrants, LGBTI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex) workers. Age, level of education and disability further compound the risks faced by these groups.

Worker diversity has been a priority area during EU-OSHA's 2020-2022 Healthy Workplaces Lighten the Load Campaign with resources highlighting the impact of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) on a diverse workforce:
