Back to OSH newsEC: asbestos experts needed for the preparation of good practice guidelines
The European Commission is developing new non-binding guidelines to support the safe management of asbestos at work. These guidelines, set to be ready until December 2025, aim to provide practical and clear advice for employers, workers, and occupational health and safety professionals on preventing and reducing asbestos exposure.
Asbestos, a dangerous cancer-causing substance, contributes to the high burden of occupational cancer in Europe. It accounts for 78% of recognized occupational cancers and 88% of lung cancers in the EU. With the revised Asbestos at Work Directive lowering exposure limits, these guidelines are crucial in supporting its implementation.
Stakeholders are invited to participate in a series of online workshops in October and November 2024 to help shape the guidelines.
