Elimination of risks from respirable crystalline silica dust in Ireland

Good Practice Awards 2018-19: Commended organisation

The Irish construction company BAM Ireland was commended for identifying and implementing measures to eliminate risks to construction workers from Respirable Crystalline Silica (RCS) dust. Several areas of concern were detected, such as working with traditional blockwork containing silica or using inadequate techniques to supress and extract dust.

In order to prevent this RCS dust, elimination and substitution were applied as well as technical control measures and appliance of personal protection and training.

These measures improved considerably the work environment and increased productivity by 35%. The method is sustainable and fully transferable to other similar organisations in the construction sector in any other country.
