Welcome to the United Kingdom (UK) Focal Point for the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) acts as the United Kingdom (UK) Focal Point of the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work.

The European Agency's National Focal Points are normally the competent national authorities nominated by each country's government and are the Agency's official representative in the Member State. The UK Focal Point is administered and supported by the following social partners:

Trade Union Congress (TUC)

Confederation of British Industry (CBI)

As well as:

HSE Northern Ireland (HSENI)

The opinions of the Social Partners are included in all agency documents. Together with other key health and safety organisations they form the United Kingdom National Information Network.

HSE is responsible for organising and co-ordinating the national network and participates in the preparation and implementation of the Agency's Work Proramme.

Introduction to the Agency

Health and safety at work is one of the EU's most important social policy areas as well as one of the most challenging: Every five seconds an EU worker is involved in a work-related accident, and every two hours one worker dies in an accident at work.

The European Agency for Safety and Health at Work was set up in 1996 to collect, analyse and promote OSH-related information. The Agency's mission is to make Europe's workplaces safer, healthier and more productive, and in particular to promote an effective prevention culture.

The Agency, located in Bilbao, Spain, has a dedicated staff of specialists in OSH, communication and public administration. The Agency is managed by a Director and has a Governing Board which is made up of representatives of government, employers and workers from the 27 Member States and representatives of the European Commission. The Governing Board establishes a Bureau.
