Bilbao hosts an International Conference on Occupational Risk Prevention ()Dr Christa Sedlatschek, Director of EU-OSHA takes part in the opening of the 10th International Conference on Occupational Risk Prevention (ORP) held in Bilbao, Spain, from 23 to 25 May 2012. The aim of the event is to establish an international forum for the exchange of information on the latest developments in working methods, trends and projects in occupational safety, industrial hygiene, prevention management and other related areas. EU-OSHA also presents the new campaign “Working Together for Risk Prevention” at a stand in the Exhibition area. |

Europe Day — 9 May — Be part of the European Union ()On the 9th of May 1950, Robert Schuman presented his proposal on the creation of an organised Europe, indispensable to the maintenance of peaceful relations. 28th April 2012: World Day for Safety and Health at Work highlights OSH in the green economy ()On 28th April, thousands of representatives of governments, employers and workers celebrate the World Day for Safety and Health at Work, an annual event initiated by the International Labour Organization (ILO) to promote safe, healthy and decent work. The topic of this year brings in focus occupational safety and health (OSH) in a green economy – a topic already on the agenda of EU-OSHA. New Healthy Workplaces Campaign: call to action to work together ()EU-OSHA launches its new two-year Healthy Workplaces Campaign on ‘Working together for risk prevention’ which turns the spotlight on the importance of management leadership and worker participation in improving workplace safety and health. EU Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion, Mr László Andor, alongside Dr Christa Sedlatschek, Director of EU-OSHA and Mr Bo Smith, Permanent Secretary at the Danish Ministry of Employment launch the campaign officially on 20 April 2012 at a press conference in Brussels. World Health Day 2012 – 7 April ()Occupational health and safety has a crucial role to play in securing a healthier and longer working life and to contribute in this way to active ageing. EU-OSHA has published, and throughout the year will be publishing, information related to the promoting of active ageing at work as well as passing the message on at public events and conferences. EU-OSHA also engages in Workplace Health Promotion to encourage the improvement of health and wellbeing at work, and thereby cutting the cost of illness in the EU workforce, including ageing workers. EP and agencies map out a better future for young workers ()Resources, whether national or European, must be used for job creation for the EU’s next generation of workers. Young people need to be placed in safe and suitable jobs. They need to receive risk education, from the nursery through to university, to develop appropriate skills, knowledge and behaviour for when they enter work. Become an official EU Campaign partner ()Pan-European or international organisations/companies willing to get substantially involved in the new Healthy Workplaces Campaign 2012-13 on ”Working together for risk prevention” are invited to submit their applications to become official partners of the campaign. Stress in the workplace to rise, say 8 out of 10 in major pan-European opinion poll ()Job-related stress is a concern for the large majority of the European workforce, concludes EU-OSHA’s 2nd European Opinion Poll on Occupational Safety and Health. Opinions on job-related stress, the importance of occupational safety and health for economic competitiveness and active ageing were measured in the survey, covering over 35,000 interviews in 36 European countries. SLIC campaign 2012 on psychosocial risks ()The Committee of Senior Labour Inspectors (SLIC) has launched its European Campaign 2012 on psychosocial risks. A SLIC working group, in which EU-OSHA took part, has developed an inspection toolkit available in 22 languages. The Campaign will address especially the health and social care, service, and transport sectors. The results and conclusions will be presented at the Final Conference in Sweden in March 2013. EU-OSHA will draw on the SLIC campaign’s experiences and lessons to prepare its own Healthy Workplaces campaign on psychosocial risks that will take place in 2014-2015. Most European countries can benefit from economic incentives in OSH ()This Guide on Economic Incentives Schemes is intended to serve as a practical and user-friendly guide to help incentive providers to create or optimise their own economic incentive schemes. Incentives schemes should not only reward past results of good OSH management (such as low accident numbers), but should also reward specific prevention efforts that aim to reduce future accidents and ill-health. Therefore the EU-OSHA expert group on economic incentives suggested the development of compilations of innovative and evidence-based preventive solutions, starting with three sectors: construction, health care and HORECA.
