Four out of five European residents say that good
health is crucial for their quality of life. Chronic disease has a
major impact on quality of life. Many chronic diseases – e.g. heart
diseases, type 2 diabetes, and cancer – can be largely prevented
by a healthy lifestyle. These changes include improving the diet,
enhancing physical fitness, and quitting smoking. Workplace Health Promotion means more than simply meeting the legal requirements
for health and safety. It includes: improving the way work is organised; improving the working environment; encouraging employees to get involved in healthy activities; encouraging personal development.
The European Year of Active Ageing 2012 aims to promote the quality of life and well-being of the European population, especially older people, and to promote solidarity between the generations. A good working life is an important platform to promote active ageing. Therefore, occupational health and safety plays a crucial role in securing active ageing through a better and longer work life. Good work also promotes cooperation between young, middle-aged and older generations.
Over the last decades both, men and women, have experienced an increase in demands from free time, working life and household demands. Work-life balance has become an often used term with regard to these changes. Finding the right balance concerning time, satisfaction and psychological involvement constitutes a great challenge. The following e-fact gives an overview on the topic, by describing the situation in Europe and giving practical advice to both, employees and employers.
Occupational safety and health culture, or more briefly 'OSH culture', can be seen as a concept for exploring how informal organisational aspects influence OSH in a positive or negative way. The aim is to convey up-to-date information on this complex topic in a straightforward, condensed way, trying to build a bridge between research and practice. The main approaches and methods that exist to assess the safety culture in an organisation are presented and discussed. This review gives an overview and selection of useful tools and techniques from the EU domain and abroad.
