Agriculture and forestry: a sector with serious occupational safety and health challenges

Keywords:

Agriculture and forestry is one of the most dangerous work sectors in Europe, with a high level of accidents involving vehicles, machinery and handling livestock. Exposure to chemical pesticides, vibrations, noise and stress also pose safety and health risks.

As our new policy brief explains, the solutions are not straightforward. New technologies and the digitisation of work practices will bring some OSH improvements, but may also introduce new hazards. To successfully tackle OSH challenges, the brief recommends adapting risk assessment to farmers and foresters’ changing circumstances, brought about by the impact of climate change or labour market trends for example, and addressing under-reporting of OSH issues in the sector.
