07.05.2012 Europe Day — 9 May — Be part of the European Union

On the 9th of May 1950, Robert Schuman presented his proposal on the creation of an organised Europe, indispensable to the maintenance of peaceful relations.

EU-OSHA, as a key contributor to healthier, safer and more productive workplaces in Europe, invites European citizens on this 9 May to mainstream occupational safety and health into their daily lives. Napo, our most famous cartoon hero, can give you a lot of good examples on how to do it in an easy and funny way. Safety with a smile against noise, chemicals, maintenance risks, musculoskeletal disorders, cleaning risks, etc.

06.04.2012 World Health Day 2012 – 7 April

Occupational health and safety has a crucial role to play in securing a healthier and longer working life and to contribute in this way to active ageing. EU-OSHA has published, and throughout the year will be publishing, information related to the promoting of active ageing at work as well as passing the message on at public events and conferences.

EU-OSHA also engages in Workplace Health Promotion to encourage the improvement of health and wellbeing at work, and thereby cutting the cost of illness in the EU workforce, including ageing workers.

Workplace Health Promotion leads to reduced absenteeism, enhanced motivation, and improved productivity.

30.03.2012 EP and agencies map out a better future for young workers

Resources, whether national or European, must be used for job creation for the EU’s next generation of workers. Young people need to be placed in safe and suitable jobs. They need to receive risk education, from the nursery through to university, to develop appropriate skills, knowledge and behaviour for when they enter work.
These were some of the key conclusions drawn during the seminar ‘Working Together for Youth Employment’ held in June, 2011. The event was hosted by the Employment and Social Affairs Committee of the European Parliament and jointly organised by EU OSHA together with Cedefop, ETF, and Eurofound.

08.03.2012 Happy International Women’s Day to all working women!

Originally called International Working Women's Day, 8th of March has been celebrated for more than 100 years to recognise the role of women and their contributions to society.
Women make up 45% of the employed population in the European Union. But still too many workplaces are designed with a typical male worker in mind.
A 'gender sensitive' approach to health and safety at work is needed to make the working lives of women healthier, safe and more productive.
