The European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA) has just announced the winner of the photography competition focussing on safety and health at work. Christopher Azzopardi from Malta was awarded with the 1st prize for his photograph entitled “Beekeeper” at the European Summit on Risk Assessment and SMEs in Bilbao, the closing event of the Healthy Workplaces Campaign.

“With over 450 Europeans dying every day from work-related causes, workplace health and safety cannot be regarded as a luxury in these times of economic crisis”. That was the message of Jukka Takala, Director of the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA), at the closing of the latest round of the world’s largest occupational health and safety campaign on 17 November.

The importance of risk assessment in the workplace, especially in small and medium-sized enterprises, will be the focus of a high-profile event being held in Bilbao, Spain, on 17 November 2009. Organised by the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA) and the Swedish EU Presidency, the summit marks the close of the Healthy Workplaces Campaign on risk assessment, which for the last two years has been promoting practical ways in which workplace risks can be managed and reduced.

“With better risk assessment practices, we can prevent many workplace accidents that occur every day all around Europe”, says Dr Jukka Takala, Director of the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA). Dr Takala will be visiting Sweden next week, as a speaker at the high level conference on labour market inclusion under the Swedish Presidency of the European Union.

As part of the bi-annual Healthy Workplaces Campaign on risk assessment, the European Week for Safety and Health at Work runs from 19 to 23 October and is organised by the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA) and its partners. Hundreds of events and activities relating to safety and health will take place throughout Europe – ranging from conferences to training sessions and inter-company events. A new case study report gives practical advice on risk prevention.
- Safety and health good practice award winners honoured by European Agency on the eve of World Day for Safety and Health at Work

Eight organisations and companies were honoured with an award at the ninth annual European Good Practice competition organised by the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA). The awards form part of the Healthy Workplaces campaign on risk assessment. The award winners and commended entries all promoted good safety and health practices in workplace risk assessment. A new booklet published today showcases the good practice initiatives they have implemented.
- European organisations and multinationals join forces to promote safe and healthy workplaces

Nine pan-European and multinational organisations have signed up to be part of the first wave of official partners of the Healthy Workplaces campaign. Organised by the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA), the campaign focuses on the evaluation of health and safety risks and aims at reducing work-related accidents and illnesses. Improvements in this area are urgently needed. To give just one example figure: It is estimated that every three-and-a-half minutes somebody in the EU dies from work-related causes*.
