World’s biggest workplace health and safety campaign goes from strength to strengthAs the Healthy Workplaces campaign on risk assessment draws to a close, a new Risk Assessment Tools Database was made available. The Agency’s new campaign for 2010-2011 will raise awareness of the importance of maintenance for safe and healthy workplaces and the need to protect workers that carry it out. The focal points already invite nominations for the national Good Practice Awards. |
Risk Assessment Tools DatabaseThe Agency has developed a risk assessment tools database with tools from all over Europe. The database is regularly updated. The most common risk assessment tools are checklists, which are a useful tool to help identify hazards. Other kinds of risk assessment tools include: guides, guidance documents, handbooks, brochures, questionnaires, and 'interactive tools' (free interactive software, including downloadable applications which are usually sector-specific). These tools can be either generic or branch/risk-specific. |
New report: Assessment, elimination and substantial reduction of occupational risksThis report features cases from a variety of workplaces that demonstrate how a risk assessment process has led to a risk being identified and successfully eliminated or substantially reduced. The main aim of the report is to illustrate how risk elimination or risk reduction at source can be achieved at workplace level. |

Healthy Workplaces Campaign on risk assessment comes to an endThe closing event, held in Bilbao on 17 November, showed important results achieved in the 2 years-campaign. Two major projects of the European Agency were also presented: preliminary results of the European Survey of Enterprises on New and Emerging Risks (ESENER), and the free Online Risk Assessment (ORA) tool, which will make it much easier for SMEs to carry out risk assessments. EU-OSHA Director Jukka Takala, joined by Sven Otto Littorin, Swedish Minister of Employment and Celestino Corbacho, Spanish Minister of Employment and Immigration, highlighted the strategic importance of risk assessment in these times of economic crisis. |

Closing event of the Healthy Workplaces Campaign on Risk AssessmentHealthy Workplaces: European Summit on Risk Assessment and SMEs As you may know, the Closing Event of the “Healthy Workplaces” Campaign on Risk Assessment to be jointly organised by the Swedish Presidency of the European Union and the European Agency for Safety and Health at Work (EU-OSHA) will be held on Tuesday 17 November 2009 at the Euskalduna Conference Centre in Bilbao, Spain. The Summit will provide a unique opportunity to hear from professionals, practitioners and participants what has been achieved during the two-year Campaign, which - under the coordination of the EU-OSHA - has been running in more than 30 countries. |
New report on Workforce diversity and risk assessmentThe report on “Workforce diversity and risk assessment: Ensuring everyone is covered”, highlights the need to carry out inclusive risk assessment to take into account the diversity of the workforce when assessing and managing risks. EU-OSHA targets health risks in cleaning industry for European Week 2009The health and safety of the 3.6 million Europeans who work in the cleaning sector is the focus of this year’s European Week for Health and Safety at Work (19 to 23 October). The Week also showcases two major new reports on cleaners, giving best-practice advice on how to cut the high rate of illness and accidents in the sector. Sectoral videos on risk management in cleaning, HORECA and construction are now available on the web. |
What do Europeans think about their working conditions?A Pan-European opinion poll recently run by EU-OSHA provides current and reliable data on people’s perception of their working environment. According to the findings, there is widespread concern among European citizens that the current economic crisis could adversely affect health and safety at work. A majority of them also consider it an important factor when choosing a new job. The results can be accessed in English (EU27) or by Member State in national languages. |
