— filed under:

A tunnel company involved both its French and UK operations. Management initiatives included workplace inspections, safety audits, training, and awareness campaigns. Employee schemes included competitions, poster campaigns and increased consultation. Sub-contractors were involved in many of the health and safety workshops and training initiatives. Workplaces across the company were targeted from engineering workshops through to offices. Outside organisations also participated including the local council on road safety and occupational health specialists on various aspects of health.

"It is crucial that young people are taken into account in all issues that concern them, and that youth organisations are consulted at all levels to that effect. Occupational health and safety is obviously one such area considering the need to create quality jobs for young people in Europe and that non-fatal accidents are much more common among young workers than among other groups of workers. It is therefore very much welcomed that the Safe Start campaign this year focuses on young people."
