Safety for school children 30.03.2006

— filed under:

Children from two primary schools took part in a series of mock work-based challenges which included assessing a proposed party venue for health and safety hazards. The children were asked to put their numeracy, literacy and communication skills to the test in the simulated work situations after attending a basic skills event held in a local sports and social centre. Besides the safety challenge, the children had to design a school of the future, build a bridge out of straws and make a tower out of octagon shapes. Even if none of the youngsters go on to have a career in health and safety, the skills they learnt make them more aware of potential hazards that may be around them at work or at home.

"This year’s campaign takes place in close collaboration with the Finnish Institute of Health which coordinates the national programme ‘Youth and work’. The national launch, involving hundreds of young people, was held on 19th June at a big funfair park called Linnanmäki in Helsinki.
Occupational safety and health should be brought into education at all levels to focus actions on young people entering into working life. The European Week 2006 campaign gives an excellent opportunity to raise awareness. I am happy to wish everyone the best success to the European Week 2006 campaign in all member states and at European level."
