european construction safety forum27/05/2005: The first meeting of the European Construction Safety Forum took place in Brussels on 10 May 2005. Signatories to the Bilbao Declarationcame together to monitor the implementation of the pledges they made at the November 2004 Construction Safety Summit in Bilbao, and prepare for a follow-up summit in 2006.

bilbao declaration sets out key actions to improve safety and health standards in europe’s construction industry22/11/2004: Leading representative bodies in Europe’s €900 billion construction industry have signed a landmark declaration committing them to specific measures to improve the sector’s safety and health standards. The Bilbao Declaration was signed at the European Construction Safety Summit on 22 November 2004, organised jointly by the Dutch Presidency and the European Agency.

While more still needs to be done to improve the safety and health record of Europe's construction sector, the signing of the Bilbao declaration is a step in that direction. A follow-up Construction Safety Summit in June 2006 will examine future initiatives and any progress made.

agency board elects new chairperson and agrees 2005 work programme01/12/2004: Luis Lopes, Portuguese workers’ representative, has been elected as chair of the Agency’s Administrative Board for 2005. The Board has also agreed the Agency’s 2005 work programme, which includes a campaign to tackle noise at work and the launch of a new Risk Observatory to identify emerging safety and health risks.

The winners received their awards at the closing ceremony of the European Week for Safety and Health at Work on 22 November in the Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao.
