27.4.2001: Agency calls for project proposals for promoting accident prevention in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)

The European Agency for Safety and Health at Work has launched a call for project proposals for the provision and dissemination of effective good practice examples that reduce accident risks in SMEs.
The 5 million euro funding scheme will provide grants of between 25,000 euros and 200,000 euros for national and transnational / European projects. Applications for funding can either be submitted by SMEs themselves or be aimed at SMEs specific needs in one of three categories:
- Training related to the prevention of work-related accidents;
- Information and communication on accident prevention;
- Provision of effective good practices that reduce accident risks.
Full details of the call (eligible project activities, selection criteria, etc.) and application form, in all EU official languages, are available on the Agencys dedicated Accident Prevention website at http://osha.europa.eu/sme.
The deadlines to submit proposals are 29 June 2001 for national projects and 16 July 2001 for European/transnational projects.
The Agencys director, Mr. Hans-Horst Konkolewsky commented: "This accident prevention scheme marks a new step in the EUs efforts to promote safe, healthy and productive SMEs. I hope that many companies and organisations will respond to our call to increase accident prevention and to share good practice throughout the European Union".

Notes for editors
- Accident prevention is a key theme of the Agencys work programme for 2001. In addition to the SME funding scheme, it is also the focus of this years European Week for Safety and Health at Work. The Agency-coordinated Week, which will take place during October 2001, is an information campaign designed to raise awareness and promote activities to make Europe a safe and health place to work.
